A former on-loan goalkeeper at Stevenage has been placed in temporary charge of a non-league side after they sacked a Newcastle United legend.

David Stockdale spent two weeks at the Lamex at the beginning of 2021 as cover for Jamie Cumming.

He played five games, saving a 90th-minute penalty away to Crawley Town on his final appearance, saving a 1-0 win.

His playing career finished at the end of last season after his release from York City but he landed on his feet, becoming assistant manager at Blyth Spartans to Toon hero Nobby Solano in August.

However, the Green Army have had a horrible start to the Northern Premier League Premier Division season, drawing three and losing three of their first six games.

That was enough for the powers that be at Croft Park to call a swift time on the Peruvian's tenure.

The statement read: "Blyth Spartans can confirm that they have agreed to part ways with Nolberto Solano.

"The club would like to place on record its thanks to Nobby for his efforts while at Spartans.

"Assistant manager David Stockdale will take charge of the squad as the interim manager ahead of Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup tie."
