A "significant fee" has ended Terence Vancooten's seven-year stay with Stevenage.

The defender, who joined from Reading in 2017, has made a permanent switch to League One rivals Burton Albion, signing a three-year deal.

The 26-year-old made more than 200 appearances for Boro, becoming one of the club’s longest serving players in the EFL.

But he had revealed to officials that he would not be staying past the culmination of his current contract and the large transfer fee made his departure not unsurprising.

Chairman Phil Wallace said: “Terence has developed significantly as a person and player in the time he’s been with us.

"But he rejected an improved offer and made it clear to us that, although he’s enjoyed his seven years at Stevenage, he wouldn’t be signing again at the end of this contract.

"The offer from Burton exceeded our valuation and we therefore agreed to his transfer.

"We have several alternative options to replace Terence and will start that process immediately in time for the new season.

‘’We thank Terence for his long service and wish him the best of luck in the rest of his career."

The player himself took to social media to say his goodbyes.

Speaking on Twitter, he said: "What a journey it has been.

"I want to thank everyone for the love and support they have shown me over the last seven years.

"I've had many enjoyable and memorable moments that will stay with me forever.

"Stevenage will always have a place in my heart. Up the Boro."

The Guyanan international also spoke to his new club's website.

He said: "I’m really excited for this new chapter, it’s something that has been a long time coming.

"Speaking to the sporting director and the owners, the things that they have in place and where they want to go is something that I’m really excited to be a part of.”

"I’m just excited to get my first game in, especially at home in front of the fans.

"Hopefully the weather’s lovely and we can have an amazing day.”

Brewers co-owner Bendik Hareide said: "Terence is an outstanding player whose experience and skill set make him a signature signing for us.

"His defensive prowess and leadership qualities will be invaluable to our team."
