A former loanee at Stevenage has moved to a League One rival on a free transfer.
Kelland Watts played 20 times after arriving at the Lamex Stadium in August 2019, on loan from Newcastle United.
He was due to spend the season at Boro but was recalled in January and promptly sent on loan to Mansfield Town.
From there he made temporary stops at Peterborough United, Plymouth Argyle and most recently Wigan Athletic, although he did manage one Premier League appearance for the Magpies, coming on as a 74th-minute substitute during a 3-1 home defeat to Liverpool in July of 2020.
The now 24-year-old defender joins Cambridge on a two-year deal.
Speaking on the Cambridge website, Watts said: "It’s time for me to make the next step in my career and from everything I’ve heard and learned about Cambridge United, I am convinced that this is the right place for me.
"It's a big challenge for me but one I am ready for."
