Jamie Reid held his hands up as the one to "take the hit" for Stevenage's draw with Carlisle United - even after scoring twice.
The striker had twice put Boro in front, the second looking like it would be the winner in the League One game at the Lamex.
But a 90th minute equaliser by Joe Garner gave Carlisle an unlikely 2-2 draw and Reid admitted he should have taken his tally for the season up more than the five it stands at so far.
"I’ll take the hit," he said. "Even though I scored two goals, I should definitely have three but I could have had four.
"It’s just frustrating because we started really well and we played some good stuff.
"But we conceded two sloppy goals. That’s not us.
"One ball over the top and I don’t know whether he is offside but it is frustrating to have that sucker punch at the end.
"And it’s frustrating because as a striker, I back myself to score more than I miss so I have to take that one."
His first came after a free-kick was flicked on by Carl Piergianni while the second saw him squeeze the ball past former team-mate Jokull Andresson from a narrow angle.
Reid said: "The skipper is our biggest threat from set-pieces so I can confidently run off that knowing that more often than not he is going to win it.
"I scored one against Leyton Orient last season like that.
"Jordan Roberts goes for 90 minutes every game, he’s powerful and great to play with.
"As soon as he got that ball, he looked up and it’s a great one which I’ve got on the end of.
"For some reason [Andresson] kept saving the others with his toe and that was winding me up.
"I should score them though. I just need to take my time and have a bit of composure.
"It will come."
Reid though could reflect on some positives and says there is no doubt that the group has the courage and intestinal fortitude to get over this quickly.
He said: "That’s two points dropped and we just have to get back on the training ground.
"We’ll review the game on Monday and that will be it finished.
"The one thing that we don’t do as a group is dwell on stuff. We know how to kick on from a little bit of a setback.
"And if drawing at home is a setback, that shows how high our standards have become."
