Sometimes the plan a team tries to execute just comes off with perfection and that was the case for United at Cotlandswick Park on Saturday afternoon, as they thrashed champions London Colney 1-5 in a scintillating display.

The performance in the 0-1 reverse at Second Meadow in August was encouraging despite the defeat, but no one could have foreseen Cristian Colas’ men putting their hosts to the sword quite like they did this time around.

United had to harness their powers of recovery though, falling behind midway through the first half as the home side’s deflected shot looped into top left-hand corner.

That was the culmination of a fairly tepid start by the visitors, contrasting the blistering opening to last week’s FA Vase win over Thrapston Town.

It was the in-form Charlie Black’s goal inside two minutes that day that set United on their way and he restored parity in this contest shortly after The Blueboys had taken the lead with a composed finish.

A fifth goal in three matches for the striker offers hope United have found the prolific marksman to elevate them to another level.

Last season’s top scorer had something to say in this encounter however as Nick Elliot showed his offensive capabilities from midfield again to drive the ball in from the edge of the box, giving his side a halftime lead.

Colney attempted to disrupt the fluency of United’s play after the interval as they sought to regain a foothold in the game.

It worked until the sixty-second minute when Elliot was on target once more, converting Jay Taylor’s cross from close range.

And before you had time to say Dave Iwediuno, the imposing forward had slotted the ball in from just outside the area to put the match firmly beyond the reach of the opposition.

It was a formality from that moment on with United in complete control.

There was even time for Elliot to complete a stunning hat trick as he flicked the ball up, spun and volleyed past the goalkeeper to round off a fine win.

The type of result that makes you question your eyesight briefly as you first look upon it, but one that was fully deserved based on the performance that left last year’s title winners bewildered.
