Biggleswade United powered their way to a 3-1 win over Crawley Green with a trio of second half goals on Saturday – sealing their first league victory at Second Meadow this season.

For long periods it appeared the hosts were going to disappoint supporters attending on national Non-League day, but they eventually succeeded in battling their way to an important three points.

In-form striker Charlie Black occupied a deeper role in manager Cristian Colas’ lineup, in order to facilitate the inclusion of teen talent Claudio Ofosu, on loan from Stevenage.

He was involved from the outset, evading a challenge down the left before finding Kane Farrell, but the former Southend United player curled his shot wide.

Nick Elliot benefitted from an Ofosu pass, but last week’s hat-trick hero at London Colney saw his shot saved by Crawley goalkeeper Dean Bull.

United had begun positively and were pressing high – but it left them vulnerable to direct balls over the top from the visitors – which proved to be their undoing.

Charlie Clayton latched onto a pass in behind and volleyed the ball past a stranded Robbie Ponting in the United goal.

Jay Taylor’s effort was held by Bull but it was a tale of frustration and exasperation for the remainder of the half with an usually disjointed defensive display highighted by Arron Browne capitalising on a mistake. Thankfully for United the former Stotfold player’s dipping shot flew narrowly over the bar following a quick break.

Jaiden Irish replaced the injured Taylor shortly after the interval and his introduction threatened to bring greater pace down the right.

But – barring a wayward shot from Elliot – it was the away side that remained on top as Browne blazed over and Clayton saw his free-kick comfortably held.

The Crawley goalscorer then had the ball in the net only for it to be disallowed for offside. Perhaps their best chance fell to Jamie Warne as he found space in the area but fired tamely into the gloves of Ponting.

It was United’s task to punish them for their profligacy and they accomplished that with sufficient time to launch a comeback.

The equaliser came after Black’s through ball was diverted into the path of Dave Iwediuno. The forward delayed his shot and the ball made its way to Farrell who rifled it home.

The home crowd urged their team on as momentum shifted towards the hosts as Iwediuno’s shot drifted wide following Ofosu’s ball over the top for him.

Irish then demonstrated his quality with a dangerous delivery both Black and Iwediuno almost turned goalwards before a penalty was awarded for handball.

Ofosu had converted from twelve yards at Tring Athletic on Tuesday night and he assumed the responsibility once again, slotting the ball past Bull with confidence to complete the turnaround.

Crawley were disheartened and conceded again minutes later. Intelligent movement from Farrell and Black saw the former spin in behind and receive a sumptuous pass from Matt Cooper who scored past an onrushing goalkeeper.

There was times during a difficult match where the result looked in doubt.

However through persistence which allowed their undoubted quality to shone United secured another win to continue their excellent run.
