Stevenage defeated visitors Morecambe 1-0 to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

A first half goal from Michael Timlin was enough to lead the hosts to victory in a dominant display.

Stevenage made two changes to the side that beat Crawley 3-1, with Johnny Hunt replacing Ronnie Henry at the back, whilst Emmanuel Sonupe was handed his full debut stepping in for the injured Danny Newton.

The host’s wide-men were causing Morecambe problems early on, with Kurtis Guthrie providing a number of crosses into the box, almost finding Sonupe.

On the other flank, Luther Wildin found his way past Kevin Ellison before floating the ball into the box to the head of James Ball, who had his attempt saved by Morecambe skipper Barry Roche.

There was a pause in play towards the end of the first half, as Boro’s midweek superstar James Ball sustained a head injury, the midfielder returned to action shortly after receiving treatment.

The visitors almost took advantage of Stevenage’s chances, as deep into the first half, Ellison was allowed to run through on goal. Wildin got back well to cover, but it was an excellent save by Farman who ended the threat.

The home side’s hardworking going forward soon paid off before the end of the first half, some great work on the flank by Sonupe found Michael Timlin, who hit a fantastic curling shot into the top corner, leaving Roche helpless in goal and putting Stevenage 1-0 up before the second half.

Morecambe started the second half with more life than they ended the first. Ajay Leitch-Smith burst into the box, slipping the ball past Wildin before being stopped by an excellent tackle by Cuthbert.

A battling piece of play by substitute Ben Kennedy gave Boro their first chance of the second half. The winger won the ball out wide, before passing to Wildin who made a strong run inwards before playing in Guthrie. The attacker failed to direct his shot on target, but a reminder of what Stevenage can do on the break.

The home side almost doubled their lead in the latter stages of the game. Cuthbert’s header was saved on the line by Roche, before ricocheting off Old who poked it out of play for a corner.

One goal was enough to see Dino Maamria’s Stevenage earn their second win in the season, early misery continues for Morecambe, who are yet to win a point in League Two this season.
