Hat-tricks all round

The Comet Stevenage Sunday Football League continued on Sunday with a spate of hat-tricks, writes Darren “Statto” Jones.

Premier Division

BARRY Hazelton was the star of the show, scoring five times as Marquis United continued their defence of the Premier Division title. Joe Dance scored the other and Steve Gibbons netted a consolation for Highview.

Nirankari Stevenage won a tight game as Andrew Iweduino netted the only goal from the penalty spot against Bottles. Sibling David Iweduino failed to emulate him as his own spot-kick was missed.

Dun Cow eased home against MBDA thanks to first-half goals from Alex Scriven and Adam Furness.

Broadhall were straight out of the blocks against Almond Tree United and dominated much of the early play and it was no surprise when John Johnston gave them the lead after he turned and finished from a tight angle.

He grabbed his second after a defensive error and then after the break he completed his hat-trick by rounding the ‘keeper.

With half-an-hour to play, they failed to clear the ball from a free-kick and Danny Lingwood nipped in at the back post to start the United fightback. Shortly after, they were awarded a free-kick, which Carl Lingwood slotted away to set-up a tense finish. Unfortunately for them, the equaliser was just beyond them.

Division One

THE Nirankari Stevenage Reserves’ juggernaut rolled on as Stevenage Colts were hammered thanks to goals from Joel Mason (four), Ricky Case (two), Steven Teale (two), Lee Allinson, Richard Hall and Terry Pateman.

Stevenage Fencing saw off Marquis of Lorne thanks to Billy-Joe Sewell and Dave Hailey.

SCS failed to raise a side against Shephall Artois and are likely to lose the points.

Division Two

THE game of the day was in Division Two as Putterills nearly managed to blow a five goal advantage in the final quarter of the match.

The game started of well for them when Dave Banks latched onto a through-ball to open his account for the season. Things got better when new manager Jim Anderson was felled in the box and duly converted himself.

Despite TC United looking as equally dangerous on the break as they were haphazard at the back, they failed to bring a shot on target and it was soon three when Pete Morrison lashed home and he added his second just before half-time.

Within five minutes of the restart, it was five after debutant Paul Coxall scored following a Kris McMahon corner. TC had two great one-on-one chances, both saved, before, with just 15 minutes to go, they appeared to pull back what was only a consolation goal from a long throw-in with the first of four from Terry Lock in just 10 minutes – two with the head and one with each foot to get to within one goal of their opponents.

A Chris Benton strike with three minutes left completed the remarkable comeback before a needless handball in the box by Craig Joy handed Putterills another penalty, which Morrison duly scored to complete his hat-trick.

A Carl Smith hat-trick saw Stevenage Leisure Limited grab all three points against Mallard Old Boys, for whom Simon Parnell was on target.

Hartham Press stormed into a four-goal lead with goals from Andy Parrish, James Khakpour-Smith (two) and Graeme Hulstrom. A1 Trophies began a comeback when a superb 25-yard free-kick from Paul Tully got them back in it. Shortly after, they had another courtesy of a cool finish from Greg Bradbury and thought they had a third when Craig Longman netted with a header from a corner, but the referee adjudged there to have been a push.

Finally, Tallem Dennis latched on to a Bradbury flick to slot in from a tight angle to bring them to within one, but they just couldn’t quite level things up.

There was a share of the points as Hermit of Redcoats netted through Ray Downes and the lively Josh Dance. Dave Pateman hit a brace, once from the spot for Timebridge AFC.

Division Three

CHEQUERS bossed their game with some great football at times against Timebridge AFC Reserves. Steve Burton dominated the midfield and netted four and was joined on that feat by Carl Thompson. Goalkeeper Paul Griffiths began on the bench as part of squad rotation, but entered the fray and netted. Ricky Wilson, Mark Greenall, Ollie Barnett and an own goal saw them hit a baker’s dozen. Ben Gumble and Stuart Satchell replied.

Bedwell Rangers were victors in a game overshadowed by some horrendous injuries. Karl Rickaby was worse to suffer as the Times Club striker suffered a broken leg. James Brown netted for them, but Rangers won it thanks to Danny Bacon and Darryl Thorpe.

A youthful Broadhall A took on the more experienced ABC Taxis team, including many of their former first-team. They took the lead inside five minutes when Paul Hancock’s goalbound shot was well saved by ABC ‘keeper Paul Saunders, but the ball found Michael Emmings, whose looping header found the back of the net.

Emmings then turned provider as his run and cross found Glenn Heritage, who scored with a tidy finish.

The second-half started in an eventful fashion. Inside the first few minutes, Joe Lee’s superbly delivered free-kick was headed into the net by his brother Terry Lee, and it got worse for ABC as the red mist descended on Joe Hayes as he was sent-off. Alan Widdows pulled one back before Joe Lee rose high to head home Rob Stevenson’s corner. The scoring was completed inside the final 10 minutes as a fine team move was finished off by Phil Stevens.

Gary Henniker and Lewis Lennard were on target for Odyssey. However, Paul Brickell and Lewis Osbourne gave Rileys Athletic a share of the points.

In an even battle, it was a single goal 10 minutes from time from debutant Ryan Bareham which won the points for Stevenage Colts Reserves. He dispatched Dave James’ cross low into the corner after coming on as a substitute just five minutes earlier. Emperors Head were left to rue missed chances.

Division Four

WALKERN Construction were always in control and Lee Kitching opened the scoring. Chris Bunker was fouled in the box for the first of three penalties in the game and he netted himself before half-time. Callum Freeman was on as a substitute and netted from a second penalty after earning it himself.

Icon Onederers scored a consolation goal 10 minutes from the end through Kelvin Starr. However, Walkern won their third penalty through Tim Roberts, who missed with the last kick of the game.

Granby took the lead through Gary Haze. Dan Dye’s shot found the bottom corner of the net to equalise for Breachwood Lions. Five minutes from time, new Lions ‘keeper Brendan Hansen saved a well-taken Granby penalty to preserve the point.

Dave Morton (two) and Mark Blankley were on the mark as Roebuck Gate saw off Proverbial. Nippy Theo Griffiths replied.

Another comeback ensued as Lorne Rangers came from three down. Stevenage Old Town went ahead when Billy Reedman headed the ball into the bottom corner. Reedman then became provider for Gary Linehan just inside the Rangers half, he took the ball forward a few steps and let fly with a shot that lobbed the ‘keeper from 30 yards.

Callum Kendrick added a third from Rich Stewart’s long free-kick when he lifted the ball over the onrushing ‘keeper. With just a minute left, and the scores level, Kerise Powell pumped a long ball into the box, which was flicked on by the smallest player on the pitch, Scott Bartaby, onto Linehan, who swung a boot at the ball for a dramatic winner.

Frank Memorial Cup

A DOUR goalless draw saw a dogged Crooked Billet Boro hold onto a comfortable three-goal advantage without reply against Coopers.
