Runny noses are something we all experience during a cold, making the sorry experience all the more miserable.

However, most of us are still unsure as to why we get these symptoms during bouts of illness.

The reason behind this is rather interesting as it acts as an important strategy in fighting a cold or flu.

Why do I get a runny nose during a cold?

According to Cleveland Clinic, rhinorrhea/rhinitis (a runny nose) during a cold is caused when the immune system releases substances to destroy harmful pathogens.

This substance then instructs cells in the nose to generate mucus to clear out these pathogens.

This mucus production then goes into overdrive, seeing the nose become congested and runny.

As the body clears out the pathogens, the mucus production should begin to calm, seeing these cold and flu symptoms disappear.

Why does my nose run when eating certain foods?

Medical News Today states that gustatory rhinitis is caused when people eat hot or spicy foods.

This occurs because the trigeminal sensory nerve is stimulated, causing the nose to run.

A person can prevent this by avoiding trigger foods or by taking certain medications to manage the symptoms.

How to get rid of a runny nose during a cold

One way to help get rid of a runny nose is to consume a lot of liquid such as water.

Healthline says this helps to lessen the symptoms by thinning the mucus into a more runny consistency, making it easier to expel.

Hot teas may also help with certain varieties containing mild anti-inflammatory and antihistamine herbs like chamomile, ginger and mint.

Hot showers are also a sure bet with the vapors from the shower helping to alleviate runny noses.

Placing your face and sinuses directly under the stream of water is one way to ensure the best results.
