Drivers are being warned of long delays in Stevenage and Hitchin due to the A1(M) northbound carriageway being closed.
Police were called at around 6.20am today (Monday) to reports of a serious crash involving multiple vehicles on the A1(M) northbound at Stevenage.
Following the crash, the A1(M) remains closed between junctions 8 and 9 northbound, and this closure is expected to remain in place for some time.
Herts Highways is warning of "long delays" in the Stevenage and Hitchin area due to the A1(M) closure, and advising drivers to seek alternative routes.
Herts Highways has confirmed that the crash involved a vehicle fire, fuel spillage, and barrier damage.
The driver of a Renault Megane, a man, has been arrested in connection with the incident and is in hospital for treatment.
A child, who was travelling in the same vehicle, is also in hospital, with serious injuries.
