Tackling child sexual exploitation (CSE) was the purpose of a police event held in Stevenage today (November 26).

The special event at The Forum Suite was aimed at ensuring those involved in the town's hotel industry are familiar with the early warning signs of CSE.

Child sexual exploitation involves situations, contexts or relationships in which a person under 18 is given something, such as food, accommodation, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, affection, gifts or money, in return for sexual activities.

It can also involve violence, coercion and intimidation, with threats of physical harm or humiliation.

Those who attended the event, including staff from the Ibis, Novotel and Cromwell hotels, heard presentations about CSE, including how police teams investigate this type of crime and the warning signs to watch out for.

They were also made aware of the Ask for Angela campaign, which enables anyone who feels unsafe on a night out to discreetly seek help from pub or hotel staff.

Detective Sergeant Dan Piper said: "CSE can take place in hotels, pubs, cafes and places licensed to sell alcohol.

"We are working with the industry to highlight the problem and improve standards; and to make sure people employed in these industries are aware of the warning signs and have the confidence to report their concerns.

"I’d like to thank all those who attended today. Child exploitation isn’t always easy to spot, but there are signs to look out for and we have provided campaign posters and training to raise awareness among customers and staff."
