A spokesperson for Herts Fire & Rescue has provided a positive update on this morning's Hitchin recycling centre fire.
The fire service received a call around 2.30am today to reports of a large blaze at a recycling centre in Wallace Way, Hitchin.
Six fire engines and two aerial ladder platforms were sent to the scene, where crews confirmed that a large pile of scrap was on fire.
Firefighters have been working throughout the night to fight the fire, and have now confirmed it is contained.
The junction of Cadwell Lane, Wilbury Way and Woolgrove Road has been closed to accommodate a high-volume pump.
Mark Barber, assistant chief fire officer, said: “Crews have been working since before 3am this morning to contain a large fire at a metal recycling centre on Wallace Way, Hitchin.
"People at properties in the vicinity should keep doors and windows closed due to the smoke and we are working closely with Hertfordshire County Council Public Health, the Environment Agency and UKHSA to ensure health and environmental risks are carefully monitored and managed.
"Some roads in the area may be closed to ensure public safety and give our firefighters space to work, please check your journey before you travel.
"I'd like to thank our firefighters for their hard work, colleagues from Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service for their support, and the public for their patience."
