A free 12-week fitness programme is being offered to overweight adults in Stevenage.

The Body Composition project, an initiative by Stevenage Borough Council and Everyone Active, is inviting 300 residents to join the scheme.

The fitness programme was created to help tackle the worrying statistic that 70 per cent of adults in Stevenage are overweight or obese.

Juanita Prescott, Everyone Active health and wellbeing manager, said: "This initiative represents a significant step towards improving public health in Stevenage.

"We're not just offering gym access; we're providing a comprehensive programme that includes body composition scans and expert guidance.

"Our goal isn't just about short-term results – we're helping people build sustainable, healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

"The best part is that participants never have to feel alone on their fitness journey.

"Our qualified instructors take time to understand each person's needs and create personalised plans that work for them."

To join the programme, which is funded by the HCC Public Health District Partnership, residents must be classified as inactive, and have a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or above.

Residents who join will get a free 12-week membership to Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre, which is managed by Everyone Active and Stevenage Borough Council.

The membership provides access to the gym, studio classes, lane swimming at the Stevenage Swimming Centre, and programmes such as Good Boost and Escape Pain.

Councillor Loraine Rossati, cabinet member for culture, leisure and wellbeing at Stevenage Borough Council, said: "If you’re reading this and wishing you could take control of your weight, here’s an opportunity to turn that wish into a reality.

"This programme is the opposite of that – it’s all about supporting, advising, and encouraging people to take control back.

"The team at Everyone Active don’t judge and don’t shame – if you’re ready to take that first step, they’ll be beside you all the way."

The programme's approach includes body composition scans at weeks one, six, and twelve, allowing participants to track their fat, muscle, bone, and water percentage progress.
