The original doors at the former Baldock Fire Station could be reinstated after plans were put forward, but community support is needed to get the proposal off the ground.
Baldock Arts and Heritage Centre, which operates from the town hall, has submitted an application to create an entrance to a new foyer with doors in the style of the early 1900s originals.
Baldock Town Hall was opened in 1897 on a site gifted to the town by Thomas Pryorm with the building providing space for a public hall, council offices and a fire station for the Baldock Fire Brigade.
The original fire station doors were in two ornate brick arches, but as engines got bigger they needed replacing with a single opening.
When the fire station was moved to a new site, the old entrance was bricked up - but that could be about to change.
"Baldock Arts and Heritage Centre would now like to reinstate arches and doors in the style of the original fire station doors," a spokesperson told The Comet.
"The aim is to make it our main entrance leading to a new foyer.
"We were first granted planning permission for the work in 2021 and then spent several years fundraising. The planning permission expired this year so we have resubmitted.
"The finances still aren’t fully secure and we will gratefully receive donations for this project. We are optimistic that with the support of the local community we will be able to create our new entrance."
