Discussions around the future of the model railway at Letchworth's Standalone Farm are ongoing, following an outpouring of public support to save the feature.
A petition was launched to save the popular exhibition following an announcement that it would not be returning.
The farm, run by the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, said that a mutual decision with the Letchworth Model Railway Society had been made to close the attraction at the end of the season.
In a social media post, Standalone Farm said: "We know that countless families have enjoyed the railway and are grateful to the society for all the memories they’ve helped us create. Looking ahead, we’re pleased to be developing new outdoor play at Standalone Farm to offer even more excitement for our young visitors and families."
Since, disappointed visitors have taken to social media and signed a petition to keep the railway, which has been there for 26 years.
One Facebook user said they would: "Consider not having an annual membership if the train weren’t there."
Another described Standalone Junction as "a community gem and should be treasured".
The online petition has also now amassed over 700 signatures.
Following the outpouring of support, the Heritage Foundation has now confirmed that talks on the railway's future are continuing.
"We have had an initial meeting with Letchworth Model Railway Society about their current tenure on site and their future position," a spokesperson for the Heritage Foundation said.
"A number of important issues were raised including health and safety and financial concerns.
"We remain in contact with the society and are continuing this discussion. We are of course aware of the strength of public opinion and the petition which has been started and will update where we can, but please note this process takes time and won’t keep pace with constant social media debate."
Letchworth Model Railway Society added: "It’s very early days yet to consider exactly what might happen.
"As things develop we will get a much better understanding of our position and will be better able to update everyone."
