A total of seven cars were set or caught alight during suspected arsons in Stevenage this morning (October 8), Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed.

Firefighters were called to Vardon Road at 1.17am where three cars were on fire, and that was followed by calls to an incident in Jessop Road at 1.44am, where one car was on fire.

Then, at 2.25am, crews rushed to Canterbury Way where another three cars were on fire in a car park.

Police believe three cars were targeted, with four more subsequently catching fire.

Mark Barber, assistant chief fire officer for Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Deliberate fires can cause a significant amount of damage, as well as being distressing for the people affected.

"On top of that our crews may not be able to attend other incidents where people urgently need our help.

Herts police confirmed it is treating the incident as a suspected arson.
