A North Herts Conservative councillor has revealed who he is backing to lead the party.

After Birmingham's Conservative party conference, Cllr Ralph Muncer has told the Comet that he will be backing Tom Tugendhat in the upcoming vote.

Four contenders to lead the Conservative party took turns in the spotlight on Wednesday - Former Immigration Minister MP Robert Jenrick, ex-Business Secretary MP Kemi Badenoch, former Foreign Secretary MP James Cleverly and ex-Security Minister MP Tom Tugendhat.

During his speech MP Tugenhadt accused his rivals of a “lack of substance, petty point scoring, and self-service” and said his past as a soldier gave him the leadership qualities to “reconnect with the British people".

After attending the conference yesterday, the councillor for Codicote and Kimpton believes that the party need to elect a leader who will "restore trust", and set out a "clear vision" of Conservative leadership for Britain.

He said: “In July, the Conservatives suffered our worst ever defeat in an election because, put simply, the public lost trust in our ability to deliver.

"I’m backing Tom Tugendhat because he is a man of integrity, service and principle, who understands the challenges our country faces, and whom is best placed to rescue our country from what is already proving to be a disastrous Labour Government.”

Party members will be able to cast their vote between October 15 and October 31.

The new Conservative party leader will then be announced on November 2, when Rishi Sunak will step down.
