Fire crews are finally leaving the scene of flooding in Hitchin which saw 45 homes evacuated, but warnings are still in place.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service have been in Woolgrove Road and Green Lane since Friday, when the River Purwell burst its banks and flooded homes in the area.

Firefighters have since pumped out 1.5 million litres of water and are now preparing to leave the scene today (September 30).

"Last night we had a presence following more rain forecast and flood warnings, luckily the rain wasn’t as heavy as expected," said a spokesperson for Hertfordshire County Council.

"Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service are preparing to leave the scene but will continue to monitor the situation. They are ready to respond should there be a need or if the weather forecast changes."

A flood warning is still in place for the River Purwell in Hitchin, with more rain expected this week.

Woolgrove Road is also expected to reopen later today, when Highways workers complete repairs on a manhole cover and clear up any contamination from the flooding.

"Our Highways crews continue to offer support to residents but also to repair a man-hole cover that has been damaged by the flooding," the spokesperson added.

"They are also preparing to clean the road and remove any contamination to ensure it is safe for road users before reopening it hopefully later today."

A number of other roads in Hitchin have been hit by flooding in past week, including Cambridge Road, Sun Street and Bridge Street.
