A memorial service is set to be held for Stevenage folk music legend Peter Clark, who passed away earlier this year.

His family will be holding the event to celebrate his extraordinary life at The Priory Barn in Little Wymondley, on Sunday, October 13, with anyone who wishes who wants to come along being asked bring a few buffet food items.

During his storied music career, Peter played for the likes of Queen Elizabeth II and Paul Simon, and was a well-known face around Stevenage.

He was the leader of folk group, The Natterjacks, which he formed in 1965 with his friends Hans Korteling and Beverly Heath. In April that year, the trio were asked to run the newly founded folk club at The Bowes Lyon Youth Centre in Stevenage.

The club and the group began attracting celebrity names, with folk icons such as Paul Simon, Pete Sayers and The Settlers coming to see performances.

When the group played at the inauguration party for the Bowes Lyon House Workers, Queen Elizabeth ll unexpectedly turned up, took a seat, and asked them to play.

In May 1965, Peter would meet Brandy Densham, who had visited the folk club with a friend and stepped up as a floor singer after being dared.

Peter was so impressed by her performance that he persuaded the group to hire her permanently, and this also led to a lifelong relationship, with the pair marrying in 1966.

When The Natterjacks broke up, the couple continued as a duet, often performing as a warm-up act for stars such as Tommy Trinder, Charlie Chester, Ivor Emmanual, Edmund Hockeridge and Ted Rogers.

Peter also had endeavours outside of music, taking part in amateur dramatics as an actor and director for The Lytton Players.

He also worked as a BBC cameraman, and wrote a book, Merlin Awakens, under name Peter Quiller.

Peter and Brandy's work was recognised in 1987, when they received the Best North Herts Folk Group Award in the Switchboard Magazine Awards at the Buffs Club in Baldock in 1987.

They picked up the gong alongside their daughter, Lucy-Sian, who fronted Stone Angels and Wide Awake 'n' Dreaming.

Peter and Brandy's other children, Amanda and Damien, all play music, and Tim is a professional actor, appearing in the likes of The Mutant Chronicles, Casualty, Eastenders and The Bill.
