A revised road layout aimed at improving traffic flow on Stevenage's Swingate and Lytton Way is set to be made permanent next week.

For months now, traffic cones have been placed along the Lytton Way filter lane used by vehicles turning into Swingate to access the Tesco car park.

"The initial traffic management plan was introduced to help people leave the car park during peak hours," a spokesperson for Hertfordshire County Council explained.

"In agreement with Stevenage Borough Council and Tesco, we introduced a temporary solution as a trial to understand how a more permanent arrangement could be established.

"We found that the new layout improved the situation by reducing the length of the slip road into the car park, and that it creates more openings and enhances traffic flow onto Lytton Way."

The revised layout is now set to become permanent, with fixed traffic barriers replacing the current cones.

The county council spokesperson said: "We have agreed with Stevenage Borough Council to make the revised layout permanent for continued driver safety.

"The trial traffic management on Lytton Way and Swingate has been successful in improving the ability of drivers to leave the car park safely during busy times.

"Tesco has been consulted during this trial and fully support making this revised layout a permanent measure for the benefit of driver safety."

Overnight works will begin on Monday (September 23), between 10pm and 6am, when there will be a lane closure.
