A new community awards highlighting  "unsung heroes" has been created by Stevenage Borough Council, and nominations are now open.

The Stevenage Together Awards will take place this October at The Gordon Craig Theatre to honour those in the community "going above and beyond".

Residents can nominate a, neighbour, colleague, or group for an award in a range of categories.

The first of which is the "sporting award" which recognises an individual or group that makes or has made a major contribution to sporting life in Stevenage - regardless of whether that is at an amateur or professional level.

Environmental contributions are also recognised, for those who have had a significant impact protecting and improving the environment.

Another category is the team award, given to a group of people working together to improve their community, either by "enhancing people's everyday lives, reducing crime or creating opportunities".

For those promoting health, there is a wellbeing award for anyone improving physical, mental and emotional health in Stevenage.

Charities can also receive the caring award - recognising acts of kindness through charitable work or fundraising, or for someone caring for "people, animals, facilities or buildings".

Winners will be chosen by a panel of judges chaired by leader of the council, Cllr Richard Henry, awards partners, and the youth mayor.

Leader of the council, Cllr Richard Henry said: “I am pleased to announce a brand new community awards to recognise the unsung heroes of Stevenage.

"I look forward to reading the nominations and great examples of local people supporting each other to strengthen our community."

The ceremony will also recognise achievers both old and young through the rising star and lifetime awards.

Meanwhile the community champion title will be awarded to individuals or groups that have made outstanding community contributions through volunteering work.

Any up and coming Stevenage businesses can get involved too, with an award for those demonstrating exceptional "innovation, growth, and community impact".

Finally, the STEM award celebrates exceptional achievements in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics within Stevenage. Highlighting "educators, innovators and enthusiasts" who have made a significant impact to STEM fields.

In addition to the other categories, a Judges' special award will be given to an individual or group for their "outstanding" contribution to the town and its residents.

To nominate, go online at https://www.stevenage.gov.uk/town-and-community/stevenage-together-awards and choose the category and person to nominate.

The deadline for nominations is Tuesday, October 1 2024.
