Gas and electricity bills have increased by 40 per cent compared to three years ago.

With winter approaching, it’s crucial to find ways to save on energy costs without sacrificing warmth. Here’s what you need to know to stay warm and avoid disconnection.

If you’re struggling with your bills or facing serious debt, Citizens Advice can help.

For general queries, contact the National Consumer Helpline at 0808 223 1133.

For serious debt issues, reach out to Citizens Advice North Herts or Stevenage.

Inform your energy supplier if you’re having trouble paying your bills.

They must offer solutions such as payment plans or instalments. From November to April, they cannot disconnect families and priority groups.

They might suggest a pay-as-you-go meter, but they cannot force you to accept it.

Energy suppliers maintain a Priority Service Register for customers with special needs. If you have young children, disabilities, or chronic illnesses, you can request services like meter reading assistance or large print bills.

This winter, the Winter Fuel Payment is restricted to those born before 23rd September 1958 and who are on Pension Credit or another means-tested benefit.

Many energy companies also provide a £150 Warm Home Discount to pensioners. During exceptionally cold weeks, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) adds £25 to benefit payments.

With the market stabilising, many are looking for cheaper energy tariffs.

Although a 10 per cent increase is expected this winter, comparison websites can help find better deals.

Switching might result in small savings and potential early exit fees, but provide peace of mind with fixed rates for 12 months or more.

Some tariffs offer discounted electricity during off-peak hours - beneficial for electric car owners or those who can adjust their usage patterns.

Cutting down on energy use doesn’t mean enduring a cold home. Simple changes can make a big difference:

  • Adjust central heating settings.
  • Turn off radiators in unused rooms.
  • Draught-proof your home.
  • Use a shower instead of a bath.
  • Opt for an air fryer or microwave instead of an oven.
