Carpetright is set to be rescued from collapse, but jobs and stores in Hertfordshire are still at risk.
Tapi Carpets & Floors is expected to buy the brand name, the company's intellectual property, two warehouses and 54 stores, but this deal would still leave more than 1,500 jobs and 200 stores in danger of being lost.
Carpetright stores in Stevenage, Watford, Letchworth, Welwyn Garden City and Hemel Hempstead could be among those at risk.
Earlier this month, it emerged that the flooring retailer was close to collapse and was set to appoint PwC as an administrator, with Tapi admitting the debt had stopped more of the business being saved.
"As we looked into the details of the situation, we quickly established that saving the entire business was unviable," said a spokesperson.
Kevin Barrett, chief executive of Carpetright's parent firm Nestware Holdings, added: "Whilst we succeeded in finding a buyer, the deal is limited to a select number of stores rather than the business as a whole and will sadly impact a large number of colleagues and staff.
"We have tried everything to turn Carpetright around and I'm truly sorry that we were unable to save more jobs."
