New data has revealed just how much first-time buyers need to put down to secure a property in Stevenage and North Herts.
The average Stevenage starter home cost £283,655 in 2024, meaning young people would need to put down £28,365 for a 10 per cent down payment.
It will cost you far more in North Hertfordshire though, with the average price for first-time buyers sitting at £302,263, meaning a 10 per cent down payment of £30,226 would be needed.
In fact, since 2012, it has always been more expensive to buy in North Herts than Stevenage.
The closest the prices came was in 2023, when the value of Stevenage homes peaked at £294,928, compared to £303,149 in North Herts - also the highest price in more than a decade.
In 2018, it was almost £40,000 cheaper to buy in Stevenage (£246,053) than neighbouring North Hertfordshire (£281,411).
The cost to buy in Stevenage has seen a drastic increase of 82 per cent from £155,552 in 2012 to now, but it hasn't been as steep of a rise in North Herts, with a 68 per cent increase from £178,904.
Rental prices also tell an interesting story, with prices in Stevenage and North Herts staying close together.
It is currently more expensive to rent in North Hertfordshire at a price of £1,279 per month, compared to £1,266 in Stevenage.
