Despite exit poll predictions, the traditionally Conservative 'safe-seat' of North East Hertfordshire has been won by Labour candidate Chris Hinchliff after more than 30 years.

In a tight race with Conservative Nikki da Costa, the North Herts District Councillor gained the seat during an election that has been a Labour landslide across the country.

North East Hertfordshire - previously North Hertfordshire - had been served by Sir Oliver Heald since 1992, who announced he would be retiring before last night's election was called.

Royston resident Chris said in a speech following the announcement of his victory: "Thank you first all of to all of those involved in running the election and the count tonight.

"Thank you to my fellow candidates for a well-fought campaign full of decency and pride in our communities.

"Thank you to all the friends and Labour members who have supported my campaign. This victory is your victory, and I would not be standing here without you.

"It's your values that matter most in politics. It was absolutely clear throughout this election that the people across North East Herts are desperate for a government that will re-order the values in our society, so that we start putting people before profit again.

"Thank you to the voters of this constituency who have given me the opportunity to fight for the systemic change and reform of our national institutions our country and communities need to get our future back."
