A 21-year-old from Hitchin who has been charged with murder following the death of a man in Ickleford has been released on bail.

Oscar Jackson, of Wilshere Crescent in Hitchin, was charged following the death of a male in his 40s, at Ickleford Sports and Recreation Club on Sunday, June 16.

The 21-year-old appeared at Cambridge Crown Court yesterday (June 24), where he was subsequently released on court bail.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the Chambers Lane site at around 10.30pm, following reports of an assault in the car park.

The victim was taken to hospital, where despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he died from his injuries.

Tributes, including flowers, candles and a South African flag, have since been laid at the scene by family and friends.

"This is a difficult time for the family of the victim, we have specially trained officers helping them through what is a tragic incident and I extend my condolences to them," said Detective Chief Inspector Nick Gardner, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit.

"I’d like to thank members of the public who helped at the scene in the first instance, and to all of those that have come forward with information to help our investigation.
