Letchworth Settlement Players are performing a revival of Alan Ayckbourn's 1974 comedy Absent Friends this month.

The 'refreshingly dark comedy' will be staged at The Settlement in Nevells Road from Thursday, June 20 to Saturday, June 22.

Tickets cost £10 and can be bought at www.settlement-players.co.uk or in person (cash only) at David's Music in Eastcheap.

The play follows Diana's attempts to console the recently bereaved Colin with a gathering of old friends, but tensions rise as they nervously wonder about the right thing to do and say.

However when Colin arrives he seems absurdly content with his lot, and makes hilariously insensitive observations about his friends - taking them to the edge of sanity and leading them to question their marriages, lives and entire existence.

Director James Barnard said: "In typical Ayckbourn style this play is accessible, funny, thought-provoking and clever.

"We have a fantastic cast who really bring to life his quirky characters, witty dialogue and deliciously awkward interactions.

"The play explores some interesting themes - the souring of love over time, the changing role of women in the 70s and social nervousness about death.

"We can’t wait for audiences to come and enjoy it with us."
