We are Plastic Free Hitchin, an environmental group of passionate volunteers trying to make our town a cleaner space to live, work and play.
We are not trying to remove all of the plastic in Hitchin – just single-use, throwaway plastic!
We work with businesses and community groups to remove single use plastics from their operations, over 40 have signed up so far.
We are all volunteers, working as part of the Plastic Free Communities network of more than 700 towns and villages across the UK and offer talks and workshops to schools, clubs and groups.

We are really excited about our programme of summer events and hope you can join us.
Hitchin Eco Day, Market Square, May 11, 10am – 2pm
The main event! Join us at our third annual Hitchin Eco Day, a family friendly day in the heart of our lovely town. There will be stalls from eco groups and businesses, repairs, local produce and lots of exciting activities for children. Supported by Churches Together In Hitchin.
Preloved Uniform Sale, Hitchin Boys School Canteen, July 13, 9.30am – 12.30
One of our most popular events, this huge event links up Hitchin schools selling second hand school uniform ready for the new school year.
We will have uniform from Highbury, Hitchin Boys Schools, Samuel Lucas, Strathmore, Whitehill, William Ransom, Wilshere Dacre, with all money made going into the school PTAs. This event is open to all and if your school would like to participate this year, please get in touch.
We will also have our preloved dressing-up costumes available. It’s never too early to pick up a scarily-good costume for Halloween!
Preloved Uniform Sale, Hitchin Boys School Canteen, August 13, 9.30am – 12.30,
Join our second preloved uniform sale of the summer and get school-ready! Unfortunately, it’s possible that not all original schools will participate in the second sale, and it will be stock-depending.
We always welcome new volunteers with whatever time commitment you can give, you don’t need to be knowledgeable, just passionate about reducing waste in our town.
