A public consultation is under way on plans for the second phase of the Kenilworth Close redevelopment in Stevenage.
Phase one of the redevelopment, which began in 2019, is now near completion and includes 31 houses, 57 flats, 88 independent living homes, seven shops and a new indoor community space.
The original plans, consulted on in 2018, included a phase two. This consisted of a community centre on the A602 green space, and 60 homes on land currently occupied by Walpole Court.
Under the plans, Walpole Court residents will be moved into the new independent living homes, and Walpole Court will be demolished.
Stevenage Borough Council is currently consulting residents on its plans for phase two, through an online survey.
It is considering constructing a smaller scheme of 24 three and four-bed houses, rather than the currently consented four-storey apartment block and townhouses, which would provide 60 smaller homes.
"Changing preferences suggest that households now prefer larger living spaces and home working opportunities," the council said.
The proposed scheme will be a development of private sale housing, which will help fund the phase one development, which has provided 118 homes for affordable accommodation, the council explained.
The guarantee of a new community centre, however, has not been forthcoming.
The council said: "Originally, the A602 site was proposed to be a community centre. There were mixed reviews on this proposal due to the site being isolated and close to highway junctions. The community association also folded in 2018.
"There will be a central community venue available for hire, launching in April 2024, where residents can meet in a convenient place to organise local activities and priorities. Once we see how this space is being used, it will help inform where a new centre is needed."
To have your say, complete the online survey at givemyview.com/kenilworth by January 2.
There is also a consultation event on December 14, from 3pm to 7pm, at Walpole Court in Kenilworth Close.
"It is key to hear the public’s view on what is important to them and what is the best way to move forward," said a council spokesperson.
