Two steam trains passing through Hertfordshire this weekend

In a treat for train enthusiasts, two locomotives are making the return journey from London to York via the East Coast Main Line on Saturday, November 18.

They will pass through Potters Bar, Welwyn Garden City, Stevenage and Hitchin on their journey from London King's Cross to York, home to the National Railway Museum and world-renowned Christmas markets.

The first locomotive, the LMS Black 5 No. 44871 will leave London King's Cross first, at 7.42am, before stopping at Stevenage at 8.31am to pick up more passengers. It will also stop at Huntingdon and Peterborough before carrying onto York.

It is expected to pass through Potters Bar at around 8.08am, Welwyn Garden City at around 8.20am and Hitchin at around 8.33am.

Run by The Railway Touring Company, it will return from York in late afternoon on the same day, though the steam locomotive will detach at Peterborough with passengers being diesel-hauled the rest of the way to London.

The second steam train - also travelling on the East Coast Main Line route that was used by another notable locomotive, the Flying Scotsman - to pass through Hertfordshire this Saturday will be the Stanier Class 5 No. 45231 Sherwood Forester.

It was built in 1936 for the London, Midland & Scottish Railway, and will be operated by Steam Dreams Rail Co.

The Sherwood Forester will depart London King's Cross at 8am, with stops at Potters Bar at 8.27am and Hitchin at 8.53am to pick up further passengers.

The train is expected to pass through Welwyn Garden City at 8.39am and Stevenage at 8.47am, with the return service departing from York at 4.13pm.
