A group in Stevenage designed to support men's mental and physical health has received funding to ensure it can remain free to join for a further two years.

The Men's Club at Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre, was launched in 2022 and will now be free for all members until at least March 2025.

Men can join a four-week course that allows them free use of the gym and studio classes at Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre, and free use of the pool at Stevenage Swimming Centre.

It is managed by Everyone Active in partnership with Stevenage Borough Council, with the new funding coming from Hertfordshire & West Essex ICS's Suicide Prevention Community Fund.

The course is designed by Juanita Prescott, activity and wellbeing manager at Everyone Active, and delivered by Tom Pena, a mindfulness and lifestyle coach.

Juanita said: “The evidence is clear that when it comes to mental and physical wellbeing, men are far less likely to seek help than women.

“Our mission is to reduce this stigma as much as possible by offering a safe space where men can discuss their concerns, whatever they may be.

“We ensure we cover all bases in the course, exploring mental health, medical conditions specific to men, back and joint rehabilitation, mindfulness, the benefits of physical activity and nutrition, and relaxation and Chi Kung sessions.

“With men who have attended the course reporting reduced levels of anxiety and pain levels as well as experiencing better-quality sleep, we know our Men’s Club is making a positive difference to the community.

"We’re excited to further increase men’s mental and physical wellbeing throughout Stevenage over the next 17 months.”

The next Men’s Club course begins on the evening of Tuesday, November 7. For more information, email stevenagecommunity@everyoneactive.com or call 01438 579379.
