The Outdoor Activity Centre and Sailing Centre at Fairlands Valley Park in Stevenage have been closed since March this year, with no date announced for when they will reopen.

The centres were previously run by Stevenage Leisure Limited, but their contract to run leisure activities in Stevenage was not renewed.

Instead, Stevenage Borough Council put the new contract out to public tender - but the contract did not include either of the centres at Fairlands Valley.

This meant that when the SLL contract was taken over by Everyone Active on April 1, it did not include the Fairlands Valley centres.

Statements published earlier this year by Stevenage Borough Council and SLL said that the centres would be operated by the council from 1 April.

But the statement on the council website has since been amended, with the following lines added: "The activity centre is closed while we recruit staff and prepare the building for operation.

"Once this is in place we will be able to provide further details on our delivery programme."

The public procurement tender for the new leisure contract, issued in February 2022 and worth £126m over ten years, did not include the activity centres.

But a statement published on SBC's website in January stated: "In terms of the facilities and services SLL provided, there will be a smooth transfer over to the new operator. Everyone Active will provide the same facilities and services to ensure customers will not be affected."

In response to a Freedom of Information request, the council confirmed that no yachting, canoe or pedalo rentals, raft-building contests or drum boat racing have occurred since the centres closed in March.

The council declined to comment on this article.
