A man has been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences after an incident that led to a major Stevenage road being closed until around 7pm yesterday (Thursday, September 7).

Herts police were first called to reports of a road traffic incident on Lytton Way, outside Stevenage police station at around 6.30pm on Wednesday, September 6.

It was reported that a handgun may have been seen, and as a result the dual carriageway was closed in both directions to enable officers to "complete a full investigation".

One man was taken to hospital with "serious injuries", and another man has been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences. He is currently in police custody while the police investigation continues.

A spokesperson for Herts police said that there is "no known risk to the public", and that those involved in the incident are believed to know each other.

Police initially said that the road closure "may remain in place first thing" on Thursday, September 7, and later said that they expected it to reopen at around 5pm. The road remained closed until shortly before 7pm.

At around 2.15pm, six police officers - and a dog - were seen searching the road itself, as well as patches of grass between Stevenage police station and Lytton Way.

A drone was seen above the road too, while a police helicopter was heard responding to the incident at around 9pm on Wednesday.

The section of Lytton Way that was closed is between Danestrete and the roundabout with Six Hills Way.

Throughout the day, traffic moved slowly along Lytton Way in the direction of Six Hills Way, before being diverted via Danestrete.

There was no traffic in the other direction, except for vehicles leaving the South and multi-storey car parks at Stevenage railway station.

According to police, the incident is linked to the road traffic collision on the roundabout at junction 7 of the A1(M), to which they were called at 6.31pm on Wednesday.
