A house in Stevenage caught fire last night (Friday, August 18), with Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) advising people to stay away from the area while they tackled the blaze.

At 9.45pm, HFRS warned: "We are dealing with an incident in Silam Road, Stevenage. Please stay away from the area to allow room for emergency services.

"If you live nearby, please close your windows due to smoke in the area."

Firefighters used six breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and two covering jets to tackle the fire, which was declared out around midnight.

At the time, a spokesperson for HFRS said: "The fire on Silam Road is now all out, although we are continuing to monitor the situation. All persons were accounted for."
