Hitchin is the place to be right now for foodies, so we sent our reporter Dan Mountney to find out about the town's newest café, Nibbles.

At the beginning of May, Rose Buds Café and Tearoom, a popular lunch spot in The Arcade, closed.

The unit would be taken over by new owners Luke and Tariq, who worked tirelessly into the early hours of the morning to get Nibbles open just a month later.

What they have to show for their efforts is an eye-catching food spot that looks certain to be a success.

Things have changed since the days of Rose Buds, with space now filled with light, modern fittings and colourful design - including a lovely mural of The Arcade which has housed businesses since 1927.

So it looks great, but what about the food?

Nibbles serves English breakfast muffins until midday, before rolling into the lunchtime menu which offers house ciabattas and smokehouse signatures using the finest meats, while specials and a selection of cakes and pastries will also be available.

And if none of the sandwiches take your fancy, you can even make your own.

I went for the Smokin Hog, which was filled to the brim with 12-hour smoked pulled pork, BBQ sauce, caramalised red onion and smoked cheese, and it was as good as it sounds.

The meat was juicy, tender and full of flavour, while the ciabatta was wonderfully soft, making for a superb sandwich.

I also had to give an Oreo muffin a go, as I'd seen them on Instagram and really wanted to try one.

Light and fluffy, the muffin was baked to perfection, and the icing was simply unbelievable.

The Nibbles experience was finished off in style, as coffee guru Phill gave my better half, who is a huge coffee lover, a quick masterclass into coffee art.

And that's why you have to go. Not because of the coffee art or the brilliant food, but the people who are behind Nibbles genuinely care and want to make those who come to visit them happy.

There was a level of care and attention taken with every customer. It really does make you feel part of this new venture which will only help it succeed.

But who are these wonderful people running Nibbles?

Firstly you've got Luke, who is the driving force. He spoke with so much passion about wanting to make somewhere that people can enjoy not just good quality food, but time too.

He's determined to make Nibbles a big part of the Hitchin community, and doing it with Tariq, his brother-in-law for more than 20 years, will be something special for them both.

That brings us nicely onto Tariq, the man behind the meat. With experience in the food industry and a passion for smoked meats, he clearly knows what he's doing based off the ciabatta I had.

And finally, the secret weapon, coffee maestro Phill. With plenty of years in management positions in coffee shops around the UK, the well-travelled Scot knows what he's doing.

Just ask my better half, who described the spiced chai latte as "the best coffee she's ever had". If that isn't enough to get you down to The Arcade, then I don't know what is.

Hitchin is the place to be for foodies right now, and Nibbles is going to be a success in this thriving community, of that I am sure.

And when it comes to great lunch spots in Hitchin, it is up there with the very best.
