Video footage shows a luxury car being stolen from a driveway in Letchworth during a recent spate of thefts.
Between April 27 and May 15, five BMW cars and four Mercedes-Benz cars were reported stolen in Letchworth. All of them were keyless.
One of the thefts took place shortly after 3am on Saturday, May 6. The owner had taken a taxi back to their house on Lawrence Avenue just a couple of hours before his BMW 530e was taken.
Speaking anonymously, the owner of the stolen car told us: "I arrived home by taxi at approximately 1.30am after attending a works evening in London. At that time all was normal and I went to bed.
"In the morning, I was awoken by my daughter asking where my car was. When I said it was on the driveway, she said 'no it's not!'
"It was terrible timing, as I was in the middle of part exchanging the vehicle with BMW Stevenage, which has now been written off by my insurer.

"The police have predicted that the car could have either been stripped down to the chassis for parts within three hours of it being stolen, or it could have been driven a short distance, loaded onto a container, taken straight to a port and exported onto Russia, the UAE, or Africa.
"When the police came around six days after the car was stolen, their view was the latter was most likely, along with the additional ten cars that had recently been stolen from around Letchworth.
"All cars stolen were high spec BMW and Mercedes so presumably they are specifically targeting high end models with keyless entry."
Their doorbell video footage, below, shows two people on the driveway preparing to steal the car.
The resident continued: "My door camera captured two people to the point of unlocking the car, but failed to capture the car being driven off the driveway. I have been told they may have used a laser pointer to effectively disable the camera.
"They also somehow managed to disable the BMW Online Services within the 12 minutes they were on the driveway, so the location services on the BMW app showed the car to still be located on the driveway.
"They are clearly a highly organised and professional group with the required skills and contacts to evade not only people’s home security, but the modern security features built into modern-day cars.”
Earlier this week, a police spokesperson said: “We urge all Hertfordshire residents to stay vigilant regardless of what car you have or the area you live in. Further information on how you can keep your vehicle safe can be found on our website."
