A 12-year-old boy who has been fundraising to help pay for a final family weekend away after discovering his much-loved nan has been diagnosed with terminal cancer has been gobsmacked by the response.

Charlie Roberts, from Shillington, was devastated when he was told his nan, Diane, had been diagnosed with terminal brain and lung cancer and only has months left to live. 

"The doctors say she only has until the end of the year, if not less," he explained.

Determined to do what he can to help her, Charlie set up a Go Fund Me page to help pay for the family to go to Great Yarmouth for a last holiday together and "last moments of fun".

Charlie, a pupil at Robert Bloomfield Academy in Shefford, explained "that's where we go on a lot of family holidays with Nan".

In less than 24 hours, Charlie's £1,000 target was reached, and the fundraising total currently sits at £1,920 - almost double his target.

Charlie said: "Wow! I can't believe it! Thank you all so much. Now, when we go on holiday, we will have the best time of our lives."

Sixteen members of the family, including Charlie and his nan, will now be heading to Great Yarmouth on Friday for the weekend.

"We are all staying in caravans," Charlie said. "I'm looking forward to going to the arcade, especially the 2p machines, and I'm going to get Nan to ride a donkey! I can't wait to go!"

Charlie's mum, Rebecca, said: "I'm absolutely amazed at the response to Charlie's Go Fund Me page.

"Charlie's so close to his nan - she helps me out massively with looking after him in the summer holidays, so I can work.

"My heart was breaking when I found out the news about her illness. 

"The fundraising has been really nice because Charlie's focused on that. 

"Whatever happens in the future, at least Charlie knows he's done something positive in such a sad situation. What more could he do? I'm so proud."
