Bim Afolami, the MP for Hitchin & Harpenden, has welcomed the announcement that Hertfordshire will receive almost £4 million in additional funding to fix potholes.

In the Budget, announced by the government last month, the amount of money given to councils nationally to repair potholes was increased from £500 million to £700 million for the 2023/24 financial year.

Of the additional £200 million, Hertfordshire County Council will receive £3,952,000.

Responding to the announcement, Mr Afolami said: “People in Hitchin, Harpenden and the villages should be able to get to work and to see friends and family without fear of damaging their vehicles due to poor quality roads.

“That is why I am delighted the Conservative government is investing £4 million across Hertfordshire to fix 79,040 potholes.

“This funding will not only improve the quality of people’s journeys but will also make our roads safer for everyone who uses them.”

Mark Harper, the transport secretary, said:

“Potholes are a blight on Britain’s roads.

"This latest round of funding shows we are committed to supporting all road users – from motorists to cyclists and bus passengers – and making journeys smoother and safer for all.”
