The Market Theatre in Hitchin is lifting the curtain on its latest one-woman play, exploring the life of Florence Nightingale.

London-based actor Charlotte Luxford plays the part of Florence, telling her story from finding fame in the mid-19th century's disastrous campaign in Crimea, to her struggle to enable female nurses to serve on the front lines, and her wider efforts to improve conditions for nurses and hospitals in general.

This is Charlotte's first time working for the Market Theatre. She said: "I was really attracted to the role and getting under Florence's skin, and knowing more about who she was and telling her incredible story."

Writer and director Kirk Foster described the play as "an emotional rollercoaster", and said: "Charlotte has been great to work with, we couldn’t have found a better actress for the role."

Performances last just under an hour, and tickets cost £14 or £12 for concessions.

The play runs from Thursday, April 27 to Saturday, May 13 - with performances at 7.30pm on Thursdays and Fridays and 7pm on Saturdays each week. Thursday night is a concession night for seniors and students.
