A small fire broke out outside North Herts Council's offices in Gernon Road, Letchworth, this morning (Thursday, March 30).
Anthony Roche, managing director at the council, said: "Thankfully the fire was put out quickly and we don't think any damage was caused.
"The police attended and are investigating, but if you saw anything suspicious around the council offices or in Letchworth this morning, please contact them on 101.
"It's business as usual for the council but we are advising the public not to visit the offices today unless you have no other option and to please use alternative methods of contacting us such as our website, email or telephone.
"You can still drop off nomination papers for the upcoming elections - please call us on 01462 474000 when you arrive.
"We will update further when we are able to accept visitors as normal."
