An 85-year-old grandmother is set to be reunited with her electric tricycle following an appeal by the Comet.

Last week, the Comet reported how Doris Hawes had had her tricycle taken after she came off it riding in Gates Way, Stevenage, on her way to do some shopping.

"We’re not sure if she was hit by a car," her concerned grandson, James Gotman, explained. "She just woke up off the bike with serious injuries."

The incident happened on February 28 and Doris has subsequently spent weeks in Lister Hospital, including her birthday (March 22), on a long road to recovery, James said.

He added: "While being taken to hospital, and before someone was able to collect her bike, it was taken from the side of the road."

James appealed for help in finding the tricycle, as it is her "main way of keeping active and mobilised" and retaining her independence.

"She's known as the little old lady on her three-wheeler, always around Aldi etcetera," he said.

Following an appeal by the Comet, "some kind soul" came forward, James said.

Reading the appeal, a man called Craig contacted James to explain that his workmate, a "keen skip diver", had seen the tricycle and thought it had been abandoned.

"He likes finding things thrown away," Craig explained.

"As I work on bikes, he asked me if I can fix it. The weld at the folding part of the frame was broken off. My dad was keen to work on in it. He's been working on it this past weekend, while I was on holiday."

Craig has now offered to fully restore the tricycle before returning it to Doris.

"I've ordered new steering bearings and expect to have it working in one to two weeks, depending on delivery of bearings," he said.

Speaking to James, Craig added: "I'm so sorry to hear your grandma's hurt and in hospital. Sorry for what's happened and the added stress of not knowing if you'd see the tricycle again.

"I hope she's getting excellent care and recovers well."

James said his grandmother is glad her tricycle has been located, although he is "not sure she will have the confidence to get back to riding it".
