Looking for somewhere to drink and have a bite to each in Hitchin?
We've got you covered, with five of our favourite pubs in the town.
1. The Victoria
When it comes to pubs, they really don't come much better than The Victoria in Ickleford Road.
Known to most Hitchin residents as simply, 'The Vic', it's warm and welcoming inside with that proper pub feel, but it is their outside area that makes them stand out from the crowd.
There are few places better to spend those long summer evening, soaking up the sun and drinking a pint (or four) with friends, and despite plenty of space and seating, I have never not known The Victoria to be rammed with punters - such is its popularity.
And then there is the food...
If you're in the mood for some pub grub with your drinks, then you have plenty of quality choice.
Firstly, there's Bun Lovin' Criminals, which according to the pub's website helped save them during lockdown. Described as the "holy grail" of burgers by the The Vic, I can confirm that statement to be true.
And secondly, Dirty Dough Pizza Co., which is up there with the best pizza I have ever eaten. You can even watch the talented chefs make your Neapolitan pizza, with the kitchen based in the pub garden itself.
You simply have to head to The Vic.
2. The Half Moon
The Half Moon was voted the best pub in North Hertfordshire by CAMRA last year. What else needs to be said.
The award is testament to hard work put in by Freddy, Emily and the team, who are always so welcoming and make you feel like a part of the pub.
With a cosy bar inside and expansive seating area perfect for enjoying the sunshine, The Half Moon offers a great place to drink no matter the weather.
There's also plenty put on for punters as well, with live music, a pub quiz and a cinema club regular features, but it's the pub's summer and April beer festivals that helps set it apart from the rest.
The Half Moon has been my local for many years, and it really does hold a special place in my heart, as a place of so many happy memories made with family and friends.
You really should go and check it out if you haven't.
3. Cooper's Arms
A pub since 1887, a recent refurbishment has given the Tilehouse Street boozer and new lease of life.
The new, chic decor, combined with the character of the historic building and warm fire by the entrance, The Cooper's Arms is a great place for a drink on those chilly evenings.
There is an outdoor courtyard for the summer too, and a food menu with plenty of pub classics to enjoy with your pint.
If you're looking for somewhere to enjoy a cosy drink with family and friends, we recommend the Cooper's.
4. Radcliffe Arms
Back in 2016, it looked like Hitchin would lose the much-loved Radcliffe Arms forever, but having somehow survived, it is thriving once again.
Having served punters since 1867, developers wanted to knock down the Victorian building and put flats on the site, but it was saved by Charles Wells in 2017, and has become part of the brewery’s Pizza, Pots and Pints brand.
With wonderful food, a great selection of beer, the spacious interior and pub garden, the Radcliffe Arms has everything you could want, and it is only right that this Hitchin institution continues today.
5. The Albert
A 2019 takeover and rennovation have turned this 19th century watering hole in a modern pub, while retaining all of its charm and character.
Purchased by Aaron Carter and Trevor Hunt, who operate Marketing for Hospitality LTD, the pair have transformed the pub, which now offers a vast selection of craft beers and a great food menu.
There is also a cosy, bright and colourful pub garden for punters too enjoy too.
You really should give the new Albert a go.
