TRAFFIC information signs which went up around a town almost two months ago are still not in use.
The Comet reported in February that a dozen signs giving real-time traffic updates were being put up around the Stevenage area at a cost of £201,724.
Almost two months on, the signs, which will be managed from a County Hall control centre, have yet to go live.
The work was carried out by maintenance contractor Ringway on behalf of Hertfordshire County Council.
“We have to keep questioning the validity of spending all that money on signs when they’ve been out of action for nearly two months now,” said Sharon Taylor, Stevenage county councillor and leader of Stevenage Borough Council.
A county council spokesman said: “The current situation is that they are all working but full commissioning and testing is not complete. So the signs could be used in an emergency but the full commissioning and testing will be complete in another two weeks.”
One of the signs was removed from the verge of Six Hills Way on Monday after complaints from residents about a lack of consultation and its location.
It will be replaced with two other smaller signs in Gresley Way and Chells Way after Stevenage county councillor Robin Parker intervened.
