A company has had to pay £15,000 to remove tonnes of rubbish that were fly-tipped on its land.
SWIP Property Trust, which owns the disused former BT Engage Building on Avenue One in Letchworth GC, has paid to have the rubbish removed today (Friday).
The site was occupied by travellers for several days three weeks ago and it is believed that they dumped the tonnes of woods, masonry and other materials on the site.
A spokesman for the company revealed it has been working with North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC), Hertfordshire Constabulary and the Environment Agency to remove the rubbish.
He said: “We are in the process of cleaning up the site today (Friday) and we are liaising with the local authority to make sure they are happy with the action we have taken.
“We are also stepping up security even further to ensure this does not happen again.”
An NHDC spokesman said: “It is the responsibility of the private landowner to remove the waste from the site. We are currently in discussions with the landowner to seek to ensure that this is done as quickly as possible.”
Normally fly-tipping would fall under the jurisdiction of a district council but due to the amount dumped at the site the Environment Agency has become involved.
A spokesman for the Environment Agency said that it had been informed about the situation by NHDC.
