Organisers behind the Hitchin Poppy Appeal – which this year marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First Word War – are urging volunteers to come forward.
The Hitchin branch of The Royal British Legion will be using The Sun Hotel in Sun Street as a base for this year’s appeal having been forced to move from its former premises at Paynes Park Social Club after the club went into administration.
The branch, which has been running for 90 years, is now gearing up for next month’s poppy appeal.
Hitchin Poppy Appeal organiser Mary Prowse said: “The poppy appeal is a month away and we need as much help as we can get. Sometimes people can only give an hour and sometimes others can give more. I am grateful for anything really. There are various jobs that people can do from driving, collecting, delivering and sitting in the shops, but there is always something to do and a role to be filled. We have had a few volunteers drop out this year due to illness so any help is always appreciated.”
Anyone who can spare a few hours to help can call Mary on 01462 431628 or 07925 528988.
