Visitors to Stevenage town centre were treated to a range of hip-hop dance routines at the weekend.

More than 40 children from the Warriorz Performing Arts Academy showed off their slick dance moves on Saturday.

The group was created by professional dancer Zara Richards, who lives in Stevenage, a year ago.

The 22-year-old said: “It was a great day and we had loads of interest from people in the town who want to sign up to our group.

“We were dancing to show people what we do and raise money for our hardship fund so that dancers from disadvantaged backgrounds can still come to the group.”

The event featured a performance of play written by Zara entitled ‘How Times Have Changed’ that tracks how attitudes to people from different races has changed.

She revealed that she had been inspired to write the routine after seeing the Hollywood film 12 Years A Slave.

She said: “It was a powerful piece that tries to show people have things have really changed for the better and how backwards people’s views used to be.

“We’re a really multi-cultural group and Stevenage is a multi-cultural town so we thought it would be fitting to perform it.”
