Teddy Sheringham casting his eye over Jack Jebb, while former Dundee and Doncaster defenders have also been on trial at the club

Stevenage hope to add to their squad ahead of the new season, and are taking another look at former Arsenal midfielder Jack Jebb.

The 19-year-old spent two spells on loan with Boro last season, under manager Graham Westley, but was released by the Gunners this summer.

He has recently been on trial at Swindon Town, but the Robins decided against offering him a deal, and now Boro boss Teddy Sheringham is casting his eye over the youngster.

“Jack has been around again after being here last year,” Sheringham said.

“I wanted to look at him to see what the talk was. I’ve heard different things about how he was last year and I wanted to look myself and have a chat with him about where he’s at after leaving Arsenal.”

Boro chairman Phil Wallace this week said the club was still looking to strengthen in a number of areas including in defence and up front, while finding competition for Chris Day in goal.

Stevenage currently have a Turkish goalkeeper on trial at the club, while Sheringham says he’s taken a look at a couple of defenders – former Doncaster Rovers centre-back Jamie McCombe and Dundee left-back Willie Dyer.

Asked whether he hopes to strengthen before next weekend’s league opener against Notts County, Sheringham said: “I certainly hope so, we’ve got one or two more in this week.

“Jamie McCombe has been down training, Willie Dyer [is here] from Dundee. We have a Turkish goalkeeper in as well, who looks quite comfortable and will get some minutes on Saturday.”

While Boro continue to put trialists through their paces, Sheringham admits it has been difficult to give them enough playing time in friendly matches because he is also looking at the players he has inherited this summer.

“It’s very hard to give the trialists proper games as well,” Sheringham said.

“If I’d been manager here last year and I knew all about my players it would have been easier to give trialists more minutes so I could look at them.

“I’m trying to look at our players; I’m trying to look at trialists. I’m trying to integrate everyone as well as getting them to try to understand what I want.”
