Pupils at one Stevenage primary school spent a scary week hunting a dragon believed to have been on the loose in the school.

When they returned to school last Monday morning, the children were shown CCTV footage appearing to show a fire-breathing dragon prowling around the corridors, classrooms and the school hall when the school was closed over the weekend.

Members of staff reported seeing rooms left ransacked by the beast and a hot atmosphere hanging in the air, while residents living nearby reported seeing something in the sky.

Outgoing Comet reporter Martin Elvery even went along to ask pupils questions about the dragon in an attempt to track it down as one of his last assignments.

Pupils were given a week to solve the mystery, completing a number of dragon-themed events as part of a literacy project.

They built models of dragons, drew pictures of them, wrote stories and made dragon eggs. It’s part of a series of “stunning starts” to the week planned by literacy leader Megan Thomas to inspire pupils.
