CATHERINE (MARY) SPICER
CATHERINE (MARY) SPICER (photo) It is with great sadness that we announce that Catherine ( Mary) Spicer passed away on Thursday, 9th April. It was June last year that we all celebrated her 100th Birthday. Mary was born in 1919 and her family home was Shephall Green and throughout her life Mary held interest in the history of Shephall village, the church and its clergy, the Nodes and Heathcote Families and her enthusiasm and depth of research culminated in her excellent history of Shephall Tyme out of Mind" published in 1984. Much of her research and papers have been donated to various archives and libraries. Mary had a lifelong association with the world of books, being a bookseller and joining the Herts Library Service in later life. The Church of St Marys,Shephall which she attended as a girl had been the centre of Marys life. For many years she was a churchwarden and her concern for the conservation of this delightful medieval building led to the founding of “The Friend’s of St Marys", of which Mary was Chair from many years, and which ensures through its fundraising activities that the church is well maintained. Marys funeral will take place on 5th May at Harwood Park at 1.15pm but this has to be restricted to few attendees because of the regulations surrounding the COVID 19 virus. There is however, to be a live webcast of the Funeral which will able to be viewed. We will celebrate her life in a memorial service yet to be arranged. All enquires to Austins. 01438 316623
